Mass Effect 1/2
April 2nd 2010 21:26
Since the game came out a couple months ago I'll be brief.
I don't really like to speak of Mass Effect as a single entity, but instead as a trilogy. The first 2 installments have been beyond stellar, and created a story / universe that is both enticing and believable. If you haven't gotten yourself into this world, now is the time.
To be completely honest, we could forgo any discussion of combat, visuals, etc. and still give this game a great score. As others have said, it truly is an interactive movie. The fact that every route you go with the dialogue changes the resulting conversation is a testament to the detail that Bioware has put into this game. The voice acting is second to none, the cut-scenes are intense, the story as I said is something you could believe in.
I actually really like the combat in the game. You can be really creative with your class specials, or you can kind of just play it like a first person shooter. Pausing the game and controlling the action of your team's abilities can make the game a lot easier for you, and certain combos can make for some humorous deaths of your enemy.
Usually what comes into question with RPG's like this is longevity, re-playability, side-quests, and a few other things. When reviewing a game I feel like all of these are huge factors in score. Mass Effect just about aces all of them. Right off the bat by going renegade or paragon you can create two totally different lines of conversation, and a third by going more middle of the road. You create different reactions, new dialogue options, and can actually effect the game and it's sequels significantly by the decisions you make. What this does is make the re-playing the game so unique from your first play through it makes me just want to throw more money at Bioware.
I guess one small downside for me is that it is kind of linear in certain aspects of the game. Other then this it's really hard for me to find something wrong with this game. I am absolutely 100% in love with it, and could not be more excited for the end of the trilogy.
9/10
I noticed after reading my first two reviews that I am VERY vague. This keeps spoiler risks at bay, but I may not be going in depth enough, if anyone has any tips, please feel free to criticize me.
